Adware

Adware can and does frequently change the way in which they behave on the end user's computer. With that in mind, we will discuss the major classifications that AFP uses to categorize adware and the manner in which they can potentially impact both affiliate's and merchant's web sites and revenue. Adware can often include spyware for collecting information about your internet browsing habits. This information is sent out again without your consent to the spyware company who collect the information for marketing purposes. Adware can monitor a user's online activities: it examines keywords, URLs and search terms and then selects which ads to serve the user, usually as pop-up or pop-under adverts. So when the user is visiting one website, a pop-up ad may be displayed to that user for a rival site.

Adware can be downloaded from Web sites (typically in shareware or freeware), email messages, and instant messengers. Additionally, a user may unknowingly receive and/or trigger adware by accepting an End User License Agreement from a software program linked to the adware or from visiting a website that downloads the adware with or without an End User License Agreement.? Adware can risk the disclosure of confidential data by unknowingly redirecting individuals to ?look-alike? Web sites. While it is less harmful, it is constantly eating up network traffic in order to pull down graphical ads. Adware can hijack your homepage or pollute your system with advertisements. Ad-Aware is free anti-adware software that can be downloaded from the Internet.

AdWare can create a logjam [in users'] computing resources, resulting in significantly decreased performance of their systems. AdWare can be obnoxious in that it performs "drive-by downloads". Drive-by downloads are accomplished by providing a misleading dialogue box or other methods of stealth installation. Adware can have legal implications.

Adware can often infest your computer so badly that it will slow down to a crawl, and will constantly take you to websites you don't want, add toolbars to Internet Explorer, pop up advertising windows. Adware can make computers unusable.
