The formation of kidney stones is a well-known urological disorder that can affect adults of any age. Stones in the kidney are formed by various chemicals in the urine, including uric acid and oxalic acids, as well as calcium and phosphorus. A kidney stone can be as small as sand, gravel or as large and painful as a bird’s egg.

Take note

The higher urine concentrations that exceed their solubility cause the stones to grow. Kidney stones are typically calcium oxalate (or calcium phosphate) in composition. Infections are often the result. Most kidney stones contain calcium, which is the main component, along with a mixture ammonium, magnesium and phosphates, and a small amount of oxalates.

  • As the stone attempts to pass through the bladder into the ureter, severe pain is felt in the side and groin.
  • It is painful to urinate with a small amount of urine.
  • The presence of blood in the urine
  • Urination urge constant
  • Feelings of nausea, vomiting, and frequent chills.

Causes

  • Metabolic disorders that produce excess oxalates or amino acids in the urine.
  • Insufficient water intake can cause incomplete detoxification.
  • Excessive intakes of acid-forming foods and animal protein.
  • Hypercalciuria is a genetic condition that can be passed on to the next generation.
  • Chronic inflammation of the bowel can lead to calcium oxalate stone formation.

Most kidney stones dissolve and are flushed from the body using different medications and treatments. Sometimes, surgery is required to remove the stone.
