Lice can be found in the hair of children but can also be transmitted to adults. This infection can easily be transmitted by head-to-head contact. Although lice don’t cause any diseases, they can be irritating and cause itching. Because they feed on human blood, lice can be found on the scalp.

Good to know

Female lice can lay up to 7 nits per hour. The nits hatch in 7-10 days. They mature in 8-9 days and then start laying new nits again. The nits are attached to the hair shaft. Head lice can reproduce quickly due to their size and rapid cycle. You can find many head lice treatments at your local pharmacy. These products can contain harmful chemicals, especially for children, or insecticides.

Natural treatments

Natural home remedies for head lice infestations are preferred by most households.

  • Combing – Using a fine-toothed, combing comb is one of the best ways of getting rid of lice and other nits. These combs are specifically made for head lice removal. They are readily available on the market. This requires patience from both the parent and the child. Divide the hair into sections when combing. Tie all sections with a clip or pin. To remove lice and nits from one section, leave the other untied. To remove lice, wash the comb and wipe it after each stroke. After each combing session make sure to wash your comb in warm soapy water for approximately 15 minutes. To ensure that all lice and nits have been eliminated, repeat the process at least three to four times every seven to ten days.
  • Vinegar or mayonnaise can also be used to treat head lice. Apply a few drops of mayonnaise to the hair from the roots to the tips. Cover the area with a shower cap. It should be left on for at least 4 to 6 hours. This is to ensure that lice are not spread. Rinse the hair with vinegar afterward. To ensure that lice are eliminated completely, repeat the process 7-10 days later. Rinse the hair with vinegar at least 3-4 times.
  • Garlic paste with lime juice – Combine 1 teaspoon garlic paste and 1 tablespoon lime juice. Combine it well and massage it into your hair and scalp. Let it sit for at least 30 minutes before washing your hair.
  • You can also use essential oils to treat lice infestation at home. These oils include peppermint oil (or tea tree oil), olive oil, lavender oil or rosemary oil, coconut oil, and coconut oil.
  • Prevention is the best treatment. Avoid sharing your personal items, such as hair accessories, towels, hats, combs, and hats with anyone else. Your personal belongings should not be shared with others. You should avoid any head-to-head contact, especially with someone who is infested by lice or nits.
