Minor burns (those that don’t cause significant damage to the skin) can be treated at home. There are other types of burns that can’t be treated at home. These will require hospital assistance. The type of burn will determine the treatment that is given. There are three main types of burns. These are based on how many layers of skin were damaged by the burn.

Burn Degrees

A first degree burn is the first type.

  • The first degree burns are the most damaging to the skin. They only affect the top layer of the skin and don’t affect the lower layers. These are painful, red burns that cause a small amount of swelling. They can turn white if the skin is pressed, and the top layer of the skin may begin to peel off after a few weeks. A sunburn is a type of first degree burn. This type of burn usually heals in three to six weeks.
  • Second-degree burns are more severe than first-degree burns. They can cause severe damage to the top and middle layers of the skin. This type of burn can cause blisters and be very painful. These burns can be very reddish or even splotchy. There may be a lot swelling. Second-degree burns usually take between two and three weeks to heal.
  • Third-degree burns are the most severe type of burn. They can cause severe skin damage to all layers. The skin often appears charred or white. Although these burns are not painful, it is more likely that nerve damage has occurred. Third degree burns may require extensive medical treatment and can take a long time to heal. It is important to avoid putting oil, butter, ice or ice water on a burn. This can cause further damage to the skin.

Take Note

It doesn’t matter how severe the burn is, medical attention should be sought if it covers a large area of the body. Cool water should be used to soak first-degree burns. After they have been soaked, you can apply an aloe vera cream to the area. If the area is not covered, it should be covered with a gauze bandage. This will protect the burn from being harmed or hit.

Second-degree burns should be soaked in cool, running water for approximately fifteen minutes. If the area is small, cool, wet, and clean cloths should be used to cover it for a few days. This will wash out the burn and prevent it becoming infected. You can apply an antibiotic cream to the burn or any other cream prescribed by your doctor. A second-degree burn should be covered with a clean, dry, nonstick dressing every day. It is important to check for signs of infection, such as redness or swelling after the bandage has been changed.

Finally

Third-degree burns should be treated immediately at the hospital. Don’t remove clothing that has been soiled by the burn. Also, don’t soak it or apply ointment. Go straight to the hospital. It is okay to cover the burn with either a sterile dressing, or a clean cloth until a doctor examines it.
