You have a headache. Or do you? How do you know if it’s a headache or migraine? Let’s look at the symptoms to help us decide. A headache is a pain that occurs in the head, but it’s usually located at the back of your head and neck. A migraine is usually confined to one side or the other of the head, and most commonly, the area around the temples.

Symptoms

A headache can be very intense and more painful than a migraine attack. Although simple headaches can be quite painful, they can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain relief. Migraines are a different story. Migraines can be very debilitating and intense. Non-prescription medications do not seem to affect the pain.

The duration of the headache is another sign that can help you determine if you have a migraine or just a regular headache. Headaches last about an hour to two hours.

Migraine

Migraine is defined as pain that lasts at least four hours but can last up to seventy-two hour. Other symptoms are another major difference between a headache or a migraine. While most headaches are not associated with other symptoms than the pain, some people may feel nauseated or dizzy. However, migraines can cause severe pain and other unpleasant symptoms.

  • Sensitivity to light and sound.
  • Visual disturbances include flashing lights, blurred vision, seeing zig-zag lines or wavy line, and flashing lights.
  • Nausea and vomiting.
  • Tingling in the fingers and toes.

Conclusion

While not all migraine sufferers will experience all these symptoms, most will experience at least one. While we have covered the differences between a headache or a classic migraine attack, we have not discussed how to eliminate them. Although there are many medications available to treat both conditions, many people are turning to natural remedies to relieve migraines.
