Headaches are a common problem that many people experience. Most headaches are not serious and can be treated with over-the-counter remedies and lifestyle changes like getting more sleep and drinking enough fluids. Primary headaches are those that aren’t related to any other health condition.

Take note

  • Tension headaches are the most common. They can be caused by stress, lack sleep, dehydration or depression, as well as alcohol intake and skipping meals. Tension headaches can feel like a dull ache and constant pressure on the top, sides, and front of the head.
  • Migraines are recurring headaches that can become so severe that it is impossible to get on with your daily activities. They can feel like a throbbing, pounding pain on one side of your head or both. Mild migraines can usually be treated with over-the-counter medications, but more severe episodes will require prescription medication.
  • Cluster headaches: These headaches can cause severe pain around one eye, and can be extremely painful. They are rare and they are often not seen. These headaches are not usually treated with over-the-counter medications, but prescription medications can be helpful in managing the pain. These headaches are usually caused by a head injury, concussion, or other illness. They can also occur when you have the flu, sinusitis or a cold. They can also be a side effect to excessive alcohol intake, taking certain medications or using too many painkillers. Other triggers for women include pregnancy, menopause, and even taking the pill.
