A recent study found that red wine can trigger migraines. However, this is not true for everyone. Headaches are believed to be caused by Tannins, a component of red wine that causes the rich color and mouth puckering effect. 33 participants were given 375ml each of Malbec, Tannat and Cabernet Sauvignon wines from South America. They were all regular wine drinkers who believed the wine caused migraines in the past.

Let’s start

Participants reported experiencing migraines at least once every 12 hours after drinking wine. However, some wines were more likely to cause headaches than others, especially Tannat and Malbec. These wines have high levels of tannin. Grape skins are responsible for the red wine’s color and sharp taste. Tannins can also be found in cheese, nuts, and tea, along with wines. Tannins can bind starches during digestion. These starches can’t be used to produce serotonin because they bind tannins.

Migraine is caused by a decrease in serotonin levels. Migraines can also cause nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light.

Warning Signs

Aura, or warning signs, can be present before the headache actually starts. An aura is a combination of symptoms that include vision disturbances and warning signs that a serious headache is imminent. Migraine is a leading cause of missed work, social gatherings, and important family activities in millions of Americans. Although pain relievers can temporarily reduce discomfort, chiropractic is far more effective in relieving migraines.

Red wine can trigger migraines, but it is known that it can be reduced in quantity or that the tannin content of red wine can be lower. A chiropractor is a good option for those suffering from persistent headaches.

Chiropractic Care

Migraine sufferers can receive holistic chiropractic care. It not only relieves the pain but also contributes greatly to the overall health and well-being of the patient. The chiropractor will identify the tensions in the muscles, and then gently apply manipulation techniques to the spine to help the muscles relax. A study has shown that chiropractic adjustments can reduce migraine occurrences, as well as the severity and duration of the condition.

Conclusion

Chiropractic treatment is safer than prescription medications due to the lack of side effects and long-term relief. If you drink wine a lot and suffer from migraine headaches often, it is possible that your wine consumption is the cause. If you are suffering from persistent headaches, it is better to see a chiropractor than to take painkillers that only mask the problem. You won’t have headaches for a long time and can return to your normal activities without worrying.
