This article is a continuation from the article “I’m having Headaches that Feel Like a Tight Band Around my Head, What Can I Do?” After posting the original article, I noticed that people were still looking at it after a few days. I decided to add some information about what you can do at home for temporary relief.

Tension headaches

These are the most common type of headache. This is when the sufferer feels a tightening around their head, almost like the head is in a “vise grip”. The most severe type of headache is the tension headache. This occurs at the base and neck of the skull. The headache may last for one day, but can last for up to a week.

Tension headaches are often aggravated by stressful situations. They can also be caused by prolonged sitting in an insupportive position, such as while driving or in a poor-supporting chair.

Sinus headaches

these can be very similar. They feel like a “fullness” feeling with pressure in the forehead, behind the eyes and around the cheeks. These headaches can be temporarily relieved by a few simple things you can do at home. I repeat, temporary relief.

This could indicate a more serious type of headache. Two things can be done to relieve tension headaches. They are both simple and very effective. The first one you can do by yourself, the second requires a partner. If you are alone, roll a small towel into tight rolls about the same size as a tin can. Place the towel under your skull, and either lie on your back on the ground or on your bed. Your head should not touch the floor or surface you are lying on.

You can rest your neck muscles and tension for several minutes by lying down in this position for several minutes. After a while, you can slowly turn your head to one side. Repeat this 10 times.

Take note

Although this method isn’t as effective as one that requires a partner to be successful, it is better than nothing. The following method is very effective if you have a willing partner.

  • PARTNER: Place your hands flat on the table with your palms facing up and your pinkies touching. Now, hold your hands in a cup as if you were trying to hold water in them. This is your hand position.
  • HEADACHE SUFFERER – Lay on your back on the ground or on your bed. It is easier to use the floor but it is more comfortable for your helper to be on the bed.
  • PARTNER: Place your fingers under the neck of your partner. Keep your hands in the same position as before. It is a good idea that your fingernails are trimmed. Otherwise, this could make you uncomfortable and not be helpful.
  • HEADACHE SUFFERER To determine where they should be, run your fingertips down the back of your skull until your fingers meet soft muscle. This is where your partner’s finger should be.
  • PARTNER: Lift your partner’s head and neck using your fingers. This will not be an easy or comfortable task for you. Keep your partner still and don’t move, just balance your person on your fingers. If you do it right, their head won’t rest in your palms at first. You want to keep your head in this position for long enough to allow their head to relax and then rest in your hands. This position may take several minutes. Don’t worry, your turn will come next.
  • HEADACHE SUFFERER – Relax, be quiet, close your eyes, and let your neck and head relax. It may feel uncomfortable at first but after a few minutes you will feel better. Do not forget to thank your friend. Your head should be slightly tipped back. You should feel two flat spots when you run your index fingers along your eyebrows. They might be tender. Use your finger tips to massage the area in a circular motion. (Count to 20). This will not feel very good. Next, place your fingertips on the top of your cheekbones and gently pull them down into the depression or hollow you feel. Do the same. Next, place your fingers slightly behind your ears on the side of your head. As if you were trying squeeze fluid from a tube, your fingers should be pulled down to the neck and behind your jaw bone. You should feel some drainage in your sinuses if you do these things correctly.
